Getting the right mix in your Cannes clothing
Other than your pink trousers, what are your top style tips to get the French Riviera look?
First of all, light clothing and light colours. If you’re going to do the Riviera, you need to do that Riviera-chic thing so it’s pastels. You don’t want too much baggage with you at any one time so you’ve got to refine exactly what you’re going to wear. And make sure you’ve got an outfit that’s got multi-usage.
Any style tips for the red carpet then?
Red carpet is very simple for guys: you’ve just got to have a beautifully cut dinner jacket tuxedo. Don’t wear anything that’s too tight because you’ll end up spending all night in it. You’ll need to be able to do lots of different things in it, like sit down, get up and dance.
We made the mistake of wearing a black tie. Apparently it’s got to be a dickey-bow.
It really does need to be the classic. Cannes has been going on for so long. I love that there are traditions when you’re here on the red carpet that have stood the test of time and will continue to do so. I’m old school.
Who are the best-dressed guys on the red carpet this year?
To be honest I haven’t had a chance to see the guys specifically. The female side is very much L’Oréal, they’re the ones that really go to town. Cavalli as well.
Is there a fashion faux-pas to avoid making in Cannes?
Just respect the fact that it’s the red carpet. You see guys who do turn up on the red carpet and they haven’t even got a tuxedo on. I mean, there are certain rules that you just abide by.
What’s your professional opinion on the beard?
Ah, the beard. I personally go in and out. It tends to be more of a seasonal thing for me. I travel a lot with my job so I’m quite often in planes or sunny climates but I’m a big fan. It just needs to be well trimmed. And it’s a modern look for gentlemen as well.
Are there any things to avoid from a grooming perspective?
The way you decide to dress should suit you and you need to balance that right, because as long as it fits with you and your style and it demonstrates the right character then it’s absolutely fine. I think it’s probably when people take it too far that things start to go wrong.
