A UAE made short film, Calling, filmed in only twelve hours, has taken the cinematic world by storm, winning over a dozen awards in six countries, including three at the World Film Festival in Cannes. The director, Raaj Rao, is born and raised in the UAE and an alumni of India’s Actor Prepares Institute, Mumbai.
When discussing the film, Rao explained: “Every human experience is a story waiting to be told. I chose to blend my own journey into a raw, immersive narrative, hoping it speaks to universal struggles and triumphs, reassuring audiences they’re not alone.”
The film stars UAE-based Ukrainian actor, Natalia Melnyk, who has earned multiple awards for her performance in the film. The storyline follows Natalia, a fashion designer plagued by crippling self doubt as she struggles to complete her masterpiece. Rao has mentioned that his decision to highlight his internal struggles have resulted in a personal, and very cathartic film.
In mid-April, Calling commenced its international festival circuit, earning a myriad of awards including Best Director, Best International Short Film, Best Actress, Best Editor & Sound Design, and Best Trailer. Recognised at prestigious events like the Sweden Movie Awards and Cannes, the film has been praised for its depiction of those struggling with mental health.
