Can you believe it was almost 20 years ago The Devil Wears Prada released? The iconic film, released in 2006 only two years after Mean Girls, is, alongside the mentioned, one of the most quotable films of the 21st Century. And now, there is apparently a sequel in the works, which will see the return of the nastiest fashion editor ever shown on film.
The film, loosely based on Lauren Weisberger’s book of the same name and starring Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, recounted the not-so-fictional time Weisberger spent as Anna Wintour’s fashion assistant at Vogue magazine.
Screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna is reportedly working on a follow-up project, although the entire original cast isn’t confirmed yet.
Meryl Streep went on to get Oscar nominated for the 14th(!) time for her performance as the malicious Miranda Priestly, later winning his 3rd Academy Award for her role in The Iron Lady (2011), where she played Margaret Thatcher. Anne Hathaway herself went on to win an Oscar for her performance in Les Miserables (2012).
This alleged sequel can, however, undoubtedly be coincidence as the film is inching closer to its 20th anniversary, with the equally quotable Mean Girls (2004) recently finding a sequel itself over its own two-decade birthday. Although, according to those who saw it, Mean Girls (2024, yes, its the same title) was actually pretty good. Do we really need another sequel? Hardly. Does it have the potential to be good? Optimistically, yes.
Presumably, one can only imagine the sequel picks up on the career of Anne Hatheaway’s character, and her cathartic albeit life-changing departure from Miranda’s incendiary office.
