A supercomputer might have ‘solved’ coronavirus symptom mystery
As the coronavirus continues to wreak havoc around the world, scientists are still puzzled as to exactly how the COVID-19 virus affects the body.
There appears to be almost too much data to contend with, and as global numbers spike to 26 million, the amount of symptoms that might lead to coronavirus have grown exponentially.
Fortunately, supercomputers are very good at churning through huge amounts of data. Earlier this year, the Summit supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory analysed more than 40,000 individual genes in an effort to understand what happens when someone is exposed to the virus.
According to a recent paper on the results, the virus spikes blood pressure levels, which can cause blood vessels to leak in the lungs (which can cause seizuers, stroke, coughs, dizziness and more).
If the data is confirmed, it could help doctors treat serious cases of the virus, and lead to a far higher survivability rate in future. Currently, there are clinical trials in place to validate the research.
