There has been an oil spill off the coast of the UAE
Oil has been spotted washed up across three kilometers of Sharjah’s pristine Kalba beach area.
The suspected oil spill now threatens the Al Qurm Nature Reserve, which is a haven for sea turtles and birds. Fortunately, there are now protective barriers in place.
That said, the oil slick has come with environmental damage, including a dead sea turtle and lots of fish.
“Our inspectors and investigation team were immediately dispatched to the location,” said Shamsa Al Ketbi, director of the support services at the Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority, to The National.
“The team had to close parts of Kalba Corniche until the clean up process is finalised.”
The cause of the oil spill is still very much a mystery. Fishing has been suspended until authorities can clean up the area, which is expected to take three days.
