BIG MOOD (board). Say dolce vita to new season tailoring from Dolce & Gabbana
Dolce & Gabbana’s SS20 DNA collection is here, and it is as effortlessly-timeless as you would expect. Esquire wanted to get to know the ideology behind the canny capsule a little better, so with the aid of a mood board as suave as the suiting, and the Italian design teams unparalleled expertise, we set to work on doing just that.
Elegance, style and tailoring: the SS20 men’s DNA collection is a stylistic journey of discovery of Dolce & Gabbana’s codes, steeped in the history and values of the brand. The brands immediately recognisable design hand-writing was not forged by accident. Years of fusing a historic sensibility with cutting-edge craftsmanship and flare, has helped form the iconic brand identity so revered by the fashion-community worldwide today—and the ss20 DNA collection was created no differently.
Seeking to reinvent the past, while keeping a steady eye on the future, classic cuts of razor-sharp tailoring are updated with lapel-chain embellishments that feel firmly in the now. Traditionally-crafted dress shoes are unassuming at first glance, but take a closer look at the molten gold heel or micro-stud outers and you will begin to understand the devilish-detailing the good folk at Dolce & Gabbana menswear are oh-so celebrated for.
“We believe that without a past and solid roots, there can be no future. Our DNA is the union of multiple elements: tailoring, elegance, suits, love for the handmade, sensuality and harmony of the opposites. Black and the use of colour, the sacred and profane, masculine and feminine, the most eccentric print and the simplicity: we are all this and it does not change over the years. On the contrary, it enriches and feeds on new inspirations, encounters, discoveries, researches.”
There is, of course, a deeply Italian soul that feeds through the collection, from apparel to accessories. Like all the brand’s offerings, Italy’s story is woven into the DNA collection through the Italian tradition of handcrafted finishes and the immaculately-tailored detailing. The accessories, especially, speak to this heritage-rooted narrative. Supple leather pouches and time-honoured signet rings sit beside more futuristic offerings of sleek, silver, logo-embossed cufflinks, and a full, block-framed spectacles.
“The secret lies in knowing how to maintain a constant balance between innovation and tradition. In the spring/summer 2020 collection we tried to tell our world, the values that have always represented us with an eye towards the future.”
While the undeviating excellency a new Dolce & Gabbana collection brings is never a shock, this fresh take on spring tailoring feels particularly special. In the era of fast-fashion and hot-drops, the heritage house’s consistently thoughtful narratives and unwavering allegiance to their DNA, makes their story telling something we always want to hear… and, of course, wear.
