A second Joe Exotic documentary claims to have new information about Carole Baskin's late husband
In the three weeks since Netflix released its runaway hit docuseries Tiger King, Americans have become obsessed with the wild world of Joseph Maldonado-Passage, better known as Joe Exotic. His bizarre story includes a number of twists and turns, including an assassination plot, blown up alligators, and a rivalry for the ages with fellow big cat owner, Carole Baskin. Naturally, there's more story to be told.
With the Netflix series concluded and a tidal wave of interest in the Joe Exotic saga, Investigation Discovery is getting in on the drama. In the new series, Investigating the Strange World of Joe Exotic, the network hopes to explore topics untouched in Tiger King, and yes—Carole Baskin will continue to be integral.
What Will the New Series Cover?
The new series touts a reexamination of the controversies that landed Exotic in jail, but through the perspective of the man himself. With an alleged collection of new, exclusive footage and “secrets” previously unreleased, the docuseries aims to shed new light on the same controversy that captured viewers in the Netflix documentary.
Additionally, Investigation Discovery’s press release states the series will dive deeper into the murder allegations that the Netflix series brings up against Carole Baskin, saying that Strange World will offer “the investigation you didn’t get to see, revealing the secrets only Joe knows, the exclusive footage that has never been shown and the search to answer the one question every person in America is asking themselves right now: although she’s denied it, is Carole Baskin responsible for the disappearance of her husband, Don Lewis?”
Though Baskin has repeatedly denied any involvement in the disappearance of her husband, the popularity of Tiger King has sparked a renewed interest in Don Lewis's mysterious death. In the weeks after Tiger King, a Florida sheriff put out a call for tips related to the case.
When Will the New Series Premiere?
Investigating the Strange World of Joe Exotic has simply been green lit at Investigation Discovery, meaning that it still has a lengthy road before it makes its big debut. According to Variety, the timeline appears to indicate it will drop later this year, but it's possible that COVID-19 restrictions might halt production of the documentary.
