Calm down men, your beard is not spreading coronavirus
Men, if you have a beard, don't fret. It is not a carrier of coronavirus. So why have men been shaving off their beards?
An infographic from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently set guidelines for menwith facial hair that originally caused the confusion. But now it's been clarified that it is only for medical professionals who wear the N95 mask or those who are on the respirator.
According to the infographic, facial hair can pose a risk to the effectiveness of masks because it may interfere with respirators that rely on a tight facepiece seal to achieve maximum protection.
However, as a caution, hospitals in England are ordering doctors with more than a day’s worth of beard stubble to shave on-site to ensure protective masks fit properly during the coronavirus crisis.
John Swartzberg, clinical professor emeritus at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health who studies infectious diseases, told The Los Angeles Times that there was a lackof evidence when it came to beards and coronavirus. He told the newspaper that though “theoretically” coronavirus could perhaps be transmitted to a person or someone else through a beard, he knows of “no science to support what I’ve just said.”
However, despite CDC's advice, as men spend more and more days under lockdown, quite a few of them have taken to growing their beards. Jim Carrey recently took to Twitter to announce he’s growing his beard "until we all go back to work." He took it further by inviting other men to join him in his "meaningless transition" and soon a bunch of other dudes, including Noah Centineo, jumped on his #letsgrowtogether hashtag in solidarity.
Even Vox has come out and said that "the only people abandoning their beards in large numbers right now are first responders, doctors, and other medical professionals that have to make room for respiratory masks. But the panic over the CDC chart suggests that beards haven’t fully escaped their tuberculosis-era reputation."
