Q&A with Bünyamin Aydin to find out the true essence of Les Benjamins
In a fashion-scape so increasingly dominated by imitation games and flat pack viral-drops, Les Benjamins is different. The Istanbul-born streetwear brand has positioned itself as more than just another haute-sport fusion, but rather as a way of thinking or living, with an ethos and designs that are steeped in culture, tradition and, of course, damn good clothes.
The mindset behind the streetwear, high-fashion hybrid is as thoughtful and considered as its 30-year-old founder, Bünyamin Aydin, who established the brand at an age of just 19. If, as he says, “It’s about the spirit within you that makes you a Les Benjamins person”, then Bünyamin’s spirit which comes in abundance, surely makes him his own target-audience.
We sat down with Aydin to discuss Len Benjamims A/W20 show, where tailored leather co-ords, buttery-yellow overcoats and crushed-velvet smoking jackets showcased alongside comforting sweatshirts and carpet-print Harrington jackets.
“The FW20 Les Benjamins represents my current state of mind and long-term vision. Before I started my design process, I decided that I wanted to revisit my teenage years in terms of the kind of music I was into. Believe it or not, I was heavily into rock and roll. Anatolian rock was a psychedelic rock movement dating back to the 1970 and 1980s of brave figures that were inspired by their eastern roots and created a hybrid sound with western aesthetics. This fusion is very similar to Les Benjamins’ core DNA. Similar to Baris Manco, 3 Hurel, Cem Karaca, Erkin Koray and many more artists in terms of their styling and music. The tulips represent the city I’m from, which is Istanbul.”
The clothes from this collection felt distinctly made for creatives, by a creative, with a dichotomy of technical design and raw aesthetic applied to the collection as a whole and most prominently Bünyamin (and Esquire’s) favourite look, “the psychedelic inspired panelled denim jacket with corduroy and carpet jacquard detailing”.
2020 is set to be a big one for Bünyamin’s Benjamins - a fresh ecommerce website, new store and a slew of drops with a line-up of multinational hush-hush collaborators is just the start – so keep an ear to the ground-breaking brand.
