Why Ben Affleck turned his back on The Batman
Ben Affleck (Batfleck) has revealed the real reason behind his decision to leave the role of Batman.
The star was supposed to helm a solo movie that would take place after the Justice League film. However, following the lukewarm box-office reception of that film Affleck standalone flick was put on hold, and then quietly shelved.
Affleck then stepped away from the film entirely, with Matt Reeves replacing him as director and Robert Pattinson being named the new Batman.
Speaking to the New York Times, Affleck has said that while he had written a script for his Batman movie, it would have been too much of a personal struggle to make it.
“I showed somebody The Batman script,” said Affleck. "They said, 'I think the script is good. I also think you’ll drink yourself to death if you go through what you just went through again.”
Ben Affleck has long struggled withg bouts of depression and alcohol.
"I drank relatively normally for a long time. What happened was that I started drinking more and more when my marriage was falling apart. This was 2015, 2016. My drinking, of course, created more marital problems."
Fortunately for Batman fans, production on the film continued. The next film starring The Dark Knight is due out in May 2021.
