How to watch tonight’s Oscars in the UAE
The 92nd Academy Awards (aka the Oscars) will take place later tonight, Sunday, February 9. But not exactly – the event kicks off at 5 pm in Los Angeles (which is 5 am Monday here in the UAE).
For the second year in a row, the Academy Awards won’t have a host. After ditching the traditional awards approach last year, the Oscars saw audience figures grow 11 per cent.
Organisers have planned on repeating what worked for them last year, and this year promised “huge entertainment value, big musical numbers, [and] big comedy.”
But the big question – besides who will win Best Pictures (1917, most probably) – is how can you watch it here in the UAE.
Apart from setting a 5 am alarm, you will need to have access to OSN Movies in HD. The coverage will begin bright and early, and last until every last winner is announced (probably around 8:30 in the morning).
If you don’t have OSN but still want to tune in, you can do so at Vox Cinema at the Mall of the Emirates.
Screening is free, but you will need to book your seats in advance.
For more creative internet users, US network ABC has the rights to air the Oscars. Live Streaming is only available in Chicago, Fresno, Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Raleigh-Durham and San Francisco – and you’ll need to be an ABC customer to get it to work.
Otherwise, you can access the channel via services such as Hulu with Live TV, AT&T TV Now and YouTubeTV. Each has a hefty monthly subscription cost (around US$50 per month), but each also offers up a free trial.
