Aiways: is this the best Chinese all-electric SUV?
Chinese automaker Aiways wants a slice of the electric SUV market, proving that 2020 will really be the year of the Chinese car.
Aiways is already one of the most eagerly awaited exhibits at the Geneva Motor Show (which runs from March 5-15 at the Palexpo in Geneva) for a few reasons, one being the introduction of the Western version of its all-electric U5 SUV.
The debut will take place one year after the company unveiled the Chinese version of the SUV – to much local and international fanfare – and the new model is supposed to be very similar.
The Aiways U5 will be powered by a 140 kW motor, providing the driver 190 horses under the hood. It has an estimated range of up to 500-kilometres. The plug-in SUV is expected to go on sale in April.
What has gearheads in a tizzy about the U5 is the price: slightly over US$40,000.
That gets you the SUV along with a battery of driving technology, along with a full touchscreen dashboard.
Alongside the SUV, Aiways is expected to show off the RG Nathalie – an electric sports car that makes use of new methanol fuel cells, as well as the Aiways u6ion – an all-new electric concept.
This, the 90th Geneva Motors Show will run from March 5-15 in Geneva, Switzerland.
