Tesla rival – Lucid Motors – starts production on first electric car
Lucid Motors has started the process of making its first production electric car: the Air Luxury Sedan.
The car company is known as Tesla’s primary rival in the electric space, and the new automaker will specifically produce only electric cars.
The vehicle-maker has officially started construction on its manufacturing plant in Casa Grande, Arizona. The plant is expected to produce more than 4,800 jobs over the next ten years.
The brand’s first car – the Air – was previewed at the Los Angeles Auto Show back in 2016. The first phase of its production will begin early next year, upon the factory’s completion, and the first motors are due to roll onto roads by December 2020.
According to Lucid, the Air will have a range of more than 600 kilometres on a single charge. It will go from 0-100kph in less than 2.5-seconds.
If those numbers are legit, that would make it the chief competitor of Tesla’s Model S, which can do the same spring in a slightly-quicker 2.4-seconds.
That said, the Air is expected to cost US$100,000 versus the Model S, which is US$80,000.
