Harry Styles says One Direction "didn't realise" Zayn Malik wasn't happy
When Zayn Malik decided to leave the global sensation that was One Direction in 2015 nobody forsaw it. Not even his own band mates. Now his ex-bandmate Harry Styles has spoken on what a "sad" time it was for them as a group.
Speaking on New Music Daily with Zane Lowe recently, Styles spoke about the difficult period: "It was kind of like we were sad, obviously, that someone had left, but also sad that he was not enjoying it so much that he had to leave.
"Because I think at the time too, the tour and everything was going so well and everyone had kind of got to this place where everyone was kind of living in a way where they I think felt pretty good. It felt like everyone was kind of enjoying it."
The Dunkirk actor later added: "I'd say a big part of it was us kind of being like, 'Wow.' You didn't realise he wasn't enjoying it that much."
However he said that the remaining members, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson also considered whether or not they would continue on and record their upcoming album as a group.
But they did end up becoming closer to each other post Zayn's exit.
"But I'd say in the moment, I guess the four of us became closer because we were like, 'Okay, this is a hurdle that we weren't expecting.'"
