Fortnite players take moment of silence to commemorate World War 1
Players of Fortnite were encouraged to pause for a moment in silence last night, to commemorate the armistice that ended the First World War.
The Royal Canadian Legion partnered with digital marketing company Wunderman Thompson and content creator Jaden Allen to design ‘Remembrance Island’ inside the Fortnite world.
Using a code to access the custom map, the island let players take a break from battling online to see faithful recreations of WWI trenches, D-Day beaches and a Canadian military ceremony.
Everything was designed based on archive footage.
Remembrance Island also made use of a field of poppies, a recreation of the Vimy Ridge memorial Cenotaph in France, as well as information plaques about eight key battles that were fought by Canadians.
At the memorial, players characters are asked to gesture a salute.
According to Wunderman Thompson, the aim was to reach younger audiences disconnected from history and showcase the sacrifices of soldiers.
"It's an attempt to recreate what real soldiers went through," he said of the stunt.
"In these online platforms, the violence is constant, but it's fictional," he said. "For soldiers in war, the violence was very real, it wasn't a game, and this experience is a reminder of that."
"They sacrificed so that we might enjoy life and play games."
