How I Got My Style by Taron Egerton
Taron Egerton is one of the most dynamic actors on the planet.
The 29-year-old actor has a range most of Hollywood can only dream of, starring in gritty action thrillers such as Kingsman as well as recent Elton John biopic Rocketman.
We sat down with the star to discuss (among other things) his personal style, hanging out with Elton and his favourite watches.
On learning from from Elton:
I must admit that Elton John’s rather extreme sense of flair has rubbed off on me a little bit. I’ve noticed that I have become braver with my fashion choices and am drawn to things that are a bit bolder. My natural sense of style shifts and oscillates depending on where I am, who I’m with and frankly how I am feeling about myself.
Confidence is key
If I am looking after myself and being conscious of my training and diet, I tend to be far more style focused. I think when you feel good about yourself, then the clothes tend to fit better and you start wearing them with confidence.
The past six months have been truly amazing. Even at my fairly young age, I have enough sense to realize that something special was happening, and that opportunities like I’ve had do not come along every day. To have been in a film that is seen by a lot of people is a joy and, unless you are wearing spandex, that is becoming more and more of a rarity these days.
The safety’s off
Before Rocketman, I always tended to play it safe when it came to red carpets and public appearances. I’d tend to wear a well-cut dark suit but, actually, I don’t really think that fits my personality. I think I’m somebody who is exuberant, so perhaps that should be reflected more in my dress sense.
Elton developed a really unique sense of style, and when doing the film the first thing I noticed was empowering it all is. Not only do the clothes make you feel taller and more imposing, but they are intensely expressive. The colour palette, the crazy, sequinned, glittery gorgeousness of it all makes you feel ready to take on the world. When you're performing, those costumes feel like suits of armour – they make you feel invincible.
I’ve always been a bit of a cavalier flyer, and now travelling is such a feature of my life. I was recently at an event where a rebuilt 1940s Spitfire plane set off for an around the world flight – I loved the sense of history and romance steeped in events like that. Before it left I went and touched the plane and was surprised about amount of give in the bodywork and how fragile it felt. I always think that when you look out of a plane window at the wing and see it wobbling.
I have a few watches in my collection, one of my favourites is an IWC Big Pilot watch that was given to me by a trainer friend of mine. I find that the brand has a very unique characteristic to it, it is solid and substantial and yet quite elegant. It just seemed to have a personality about it.
Holding a note
I love singing. During the filming of Rocketman, instead of using the versions of ‘Your Song’ and ‘I’m Still Standing’ that we had recorded at Abbey Road studios, they used the ones of me singing on set during filming.
Work out release
I’m quite stocky, so I do think it is important to keep fit – especially when I’m working and the role requires it. I find going to the gym a way of letting off steam and helping me clear my head after a long day.
