Graham creates $5,450 oversized chronograph celebrating Day of the Dead
Chances are you’ve not heard of Graham, a watch brand with its roots dating all the way back to 1695. More than 300 years later, the brand makes a name for itself with super modern, quirky, oversized chronographs. Its Day of the Dead piece is no exception.
To clarify, Blancpain is still the oldest watch brand in the world, operating since 1735, Graham however is built upon the inventions and passions of George Graham, a British scientist and horologist who began tinkering away with clocks professionally as early as 1695. In 1994 , the rights to his name were acquired and a new team took to brining to life the innovations of Graham for the modern world.
Graham’s calling card is the Chronofighter collection, characterised by an oversized chrono trigger on the left-hand side of the watch. As its founder Eric Loth explains “I wanted it to be a trigger. We found an instrument with a timekeeping system that was made during World War II for bomber pilots,” expounds Loth. “It was used by the Germans, Italians as well as the English. They couldn’t use a regular chronograph while flying with their thick gloves on. It was a bigger watch, worn on the leg and used to measure time lapses between bomb drops.”
What this massive lever does is stop the wearer from accidentally triggering the chronograph timing functions, as well as also making the watch usable while wearing thick gloves as a pilot would.
Its latest Chronofighter maintains this unusual left-handed lever and also adds in even more crazy design choices. The new watch is inspired by the Mexican celebratory feast ‘The Day of the Dead’.
The blacked-out steel watch uses special techniques to artificially age the steel and give it a more vintage feel. The piece is finished with a grey PVD casing to give it the black-out vibe. In reference to the Mexican celebration the watch features a bone shaped 12 o’clock numeral and a subdial at 6 as a motif of a traditional skull seen in the feast.
The watch is limited to just 25 pieces and comes on a sporty strap with a US $5,450 retail.
