Lewis Hamilton stirs up controversy after saying vegan diet 'only way to save our planet'
Lewis Hamilton has had a pretty tough weekend. He lost out on the race win in Japan because of a team 'f*** up' with a badly planned pit stop and now he's being lambasted on social media for his comments on veganism.
The five-time Formula One world champion took to his Instagram stories to share his thoughts on the planet Earth and conservation. He said we were living in a "messed up place" with leaders who are "either uneducated or don't care about the environment at all".
Earlier this year, the Mercedes driver partnered with hospitality organisation The Cream Group and investors including UNICEF Ambassador and early backer of Beyond Meat, Tommaso Chiabra to launch Neat Burger – the first plant-based sustainable burger chain of its kind.
Neat Burger promises to transform the way people see plant-based food by appealing to not only those who follow plant-based diets, but any individuals, meat-eaters included, who want to eat delicious meat-free dishes that are more sustainable, healthier and ethical.
With its first outlet opening just off Regent Street, London, the team has ambitious plans to expand the concept globally with 14 franchises planned in the next 24 months.
The 34-year-old has moved toward being more sustainable in hs daily life as well and earlier this year sold off his red candy coloured private jet.
After his initial comments recieved huge criticism from his followers, he posted nother cryptic statement.
Lewis Hamilton has Carbon footprint of an elephant flying around the World , and drives a high powered petrol guzzler round and round in circles , and has started his own vegan chain . And tells us it’s the way to save the Planet . https://t.co/jYM6NYqEqB— Gareth Wyn Jones (@1GarethWynJones) October 15, 2019
“Honestly I feel like giving up on everything. Shut down completely. Why bother when the world is such a mess and people don’t seem to care. I’m going to take a moment away to gather my thoughts. Thank you to all of you who give a damn about the world.”
