Andy Murray's butt has just been voted 'rear of the year' 2019
Now if someone at the local pub casually metioned: " hey do you know who won the 'rear of the year' award?", you'd probably think they were joking. But no, it's 2019 and this is an actual, real thing.
Since 1976, publicity consultant Anthony Edwards has picked the best rear of the year (women) and has awarded it to men since 1997.
This year the top prize has gone to Scottish tennis star Sir Andy Murray. He apparently faced tough compettition from the likes or should we say backsides of Harry Styles, Aiden Turner, Idris Elba, and Jamie Dornan.
Speaking to The National newspaper based out of Scotland, Edwards said: “Andy Murray, 32, who took the title from Poldark star Aiden Turner is clearly one of Britain’s most popular athletes and his well-toned physique seems to command an army of fans, particularly around Wimbledon tennis fortnight.”
Considering that Edwards has been running this award for neigh on 30 years, perhaps it might be time to remind him about positive body image given that it is, in fact, 2019. The problematic statement seems to be the fact that Edwards appears to be making the connection between Murray's well-toned physique and his vast number of fans. Not his Wimbledon victory, or his 45 singles titles, or the fact that the man has recently come back from a debilitating hip surgery to playing tennis at a professional level.
On the Rear of the Year award, Murray said to The Sun: “I’m very proud of it. My wife has always told me I have a nice bum.”
