PlayStation once and for all confirms name of the ‘X’ button
It’s a debate as old as time, apparently. Or rather as old as 1994 when the PlayStation 1 came out. Is the ‘X’ button to be called ‘X’ or ‘Cross’? PlayStation has weighed in with the official verdict.
While initally playing games, the most common question would be “which button is jump?” To which the response was always “The ‘X’ button”. According to PlayStation UK, we've had it wrong the whole time and should be calling it the ‘Cross’ button.
Following some heated debate on Twitter as to the proper name for the button, PlayStation finally shut everyone up releasing an ‘official’ tweet noting all the proper names for the four geometrical buttons.
The Sony company’s justification was annoyingly reasonable. All the other buttons we name according to its geometrical shape, the ‘X’ button on the other hand, does not stick to its geometrical term.
It was further reinforced when someone pointed out that the ‘X’ button in terms of geometric dimensions, is a cross and not an ‘X’ as technically an ‘X’ looks slightly different.
Once PlayStation had gone about proving us all wrong, it took the chance to meme us hard. You can check out some of these memes below:
Even with all the proof and evidence given to us, PlayStation later released a poll asking what people call the button and 81% said ‘X’.
What do you call it?— PlayStation (@PlayStation) September 7, 2019
Maybe Sony should’ve gone with the lettering system on its buttons like Nintendo and Microsoft? But then again, where’s the fun in that?
