New Star Wars leak suggests Rey and Palpatine are related
If you're the sort of masochist who loves to spoil Star Wars for yourself months before the film premieres, then have we got a story for you.
With The Rise of Skywalker dropping in December 2019, anticipation for the big finale to the decades-spanning Skywalker saga is at an all-time high. The question on everyone's mind? Who. Are. Rey's. Parents!
While The Last Jedi did a fine job hopscotching over that gigantic mystery, director J.J. Abrams has his work cut out for him in explaining how, exactly, this seemingly inconsequential peasant from a "nowhere" planet became the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy.
Is it Midichlorians? A powerful lineage? Or, as some things go in the world of Star Wars, it could be just luck of the draw. Now, an alleged information leak from a Reddit user named "JediPaxis," who's known for only publishing leaks with merit, seems to indicate otherwise.
Warning. Possible spoilers ahead.
"Kylo adds another wrinkle to Rey’s backstory," u/JediPaxis explains in a sizable dump of information allegedly gleaned from anonymous sources. "He maintains that while her parents are nobodies, her grandparents (more specifically her grandfather) wasn’t.
Kylo tells Rey that she is the granddaughter of Papatine. This explains his interest in bringing the random nobody from Jakku into the fold."
Palpatine's granddaughter, eh? If what this Redditor says is true, one of the most long-running theories of this new Star Wars trilogy seems to be confirmed. Fans of iconic Lucasfilm franchise have been theorizing that Rey is descended from Palpatine for years now.
Everything from her so-called "Imperial accent" to her lightsaber fighting style have been explored, with many fans pointing to connections from Lucas's prequel trilogy as definitive proof that she's related to Ol' Sheev (yes, that's his first name).
But, as with all rumors, it's impossible to know if JediPaxis knows the truth.
