An asteroid that changes colour has been detected in space
Most asteroids don’t have comet like qualities and definitely do not change in colour, however this one does. A colour changing comet- like asteroid has been detected for the very first time.
The colour changing asteroid, Asteroid 6478 Gault, was discovered back in 1988, however it recently began to show its distinctive qualities between 2018 and 2019.
The asteroid is located between Jupiter and Mars, and changes in colour from red to blue, though it’s not very noticeable unless an infrared spectrum telescope is used.
The shift in colour is believed to be a result of the asteroid spinning quickly causing it to shed its old surface, revealing fresh material underneath.
Adding to its uniqueness, 6478 Gault has two tails which might suggest the asteroid might be falling apart, but not confirmed yet.
Comets are made out of ice, dust and rocky material and usually known for their tails, while asteroids are made out of rocky material, and metals and don’t have tails.
