Supreme's next pop-culture inspiration: The Smiths

Skate-brand Supreme's Autumn/Winter collection is inspired by The Smiths.
The Smiths stand as one of the most popular and influential British bands of all time, despite a short-lived five years of working together.
at the time, their music was different to everyone else. Morrissey, the lead singer, was even hailed by David Bowie as the greatest sony lyricist of his time.
The Smiths
Even though the band went from 1982 to 1987, their popularity is as strong as ever. Fitting then that super-cool streetwear brand Supreme has decided to link up with them again.
Taking to Instagram, Supreme teased a The Smiths inspired denim jacket. The jacket, in a distressed and dyed look, takes after the band’s ‘Meat is Murder’ album. The back of the jacket features the U.S. Marine soldier as seen on the cover of the 1985 album. Throw this jacket on with a white t-shirt and black jeans and you’ll seriously look like a 'charming man'.
Where the soldier’s helmet once had “Meat is Murder” scrawled across it, it now proudly goes for an embossed “supreme is love.” message instead. This jacket is seriously trendy and will make up part of a later collection in Autumn/Winter, please, please Supreme, let us get what we want.
The marine in the photo is Corporal Michael Wynn, who was fighting in Vietnam when the photo was taken in 1967. Wynn had “Make War Not Love” written on his helmet in the original photo.
This isn’t the first time Supreme has given us Smith's-inspired threads to wear. The brand has previously used Morrissey’s image on a t-shirt. Sold back in 2016, the t-shirt managed to personally annoy Morrissey, as many things do.
Morrissey said at the time he had asked Supreme not to use the photo. He said: “I apologise enormously for the enfeebled photograph of me issued this week by Supreme. The shot was taken in October 2015. I considered the photograph to be fit only for a medical encyclopaedia and I pleaded with Supreme not to use it.”
