Netflix debuts new Scorsese The Irishman’ trailer
The film – which sees De Niro, Pacino and Pesci all digitally enhanced to look younger – follows the crime epic of powerful union leader Jimmy Hoffa, crime boss Russell Bufalino and Frank ‘The Irishman’ Sheeran.
The film is an adaptation of the book, ‘I Heard You Paint Houses’ by Charles Brandt, who based it on interviews he did with Sheeran.
Irishman is the first time Al Pacino has worked with Scorsese, but the ninth time he has worked with Robert De Niro.
The film makes use of anti-aging effects, courtesy of Industrial Light & Magic – the studio founded by George Lucas. The on-screen photo shopping effect is a tad eerie at times, but there’s no arguing that it has made all its stars – especially the 75-year-old De Niro – look decades younger.
The project was in development limbo for the past ten years, as studios passed it around. According to sources, the high cost of the special effects were why the film could not find a home. That’s when Netflix got involved. The film reportedly cost $140-million to make.
Irishman will make its world premiere on the opening night of the New York Film Festival, on September 27. Netflix also plans to release the film in select cinemas, to ensure it’s eligible for Oscar nominations.
