Dior removes Bella Hadid hoardings in the UAE
Bella Hadid is in the middle of major controversy in the Middle East, following an Instagram blunder where according to her fans she disrespected the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Despite her Middle Eastern roots and a sincere apology online, brands like Sephora and Dior have started removing images of the 22-year-old in places like The Dubai Mall
The hashtag ‘BellaHadidIsRacist’ did not go away after Hadid posted an apology in both English and Arabic on her social media accounts.
Previously Esquire Middle East wrote about how people were calling for brands like Dior and Calvin Klein to stop working with the model.
"For appeasement, Parfums Christian Dior has removed its visuals of Bella Hadid in The Dubai Mall," a spokesperson confirmed to The National.
The Dubai Mall also took to Twitter to confirm it is firmly aware of the Hadid saga, and that the Mall ensures to respect the cultural sensitivities of those in the Mall.
We uphold the values of our nation and Saudi Arabia with the highest respect and regard. We have brought the matter to the attention of the retailers to take appropriate steps.— The Dubai Mall (@TheDubaiMall) June 20, 2019
Leading the campaign against Hadid, particually in the UAE but also Saudi is Banat Zayed, an Emirati blogger and influencer, who has almost 150k Twitter followers. He uses the #BellaHadidIsRacist on many of his tweets, and calls for places like The Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates to remove all Hadid media.
Remove #BellaHadidIsRacis photos and end your contacts with her if you want us (Emiratis and Saudis) to continue shopping from your shops/brands @TheDubaiMall @MallofEmirates @Sephora @Dior #BVLGARI #Versace #Burberry @dolcegabbana pic.twitter.com/QfeK6zIj7E— BanatZayed ﮼بنات ﮼زايد (@banatzayed) June 19, 2019
He goes onto release images of Hadid’s face being removed, and asks other brands to do the same, such as Sephora.
Her last Twitter message on the matter reads: "This was an honest mistake on an early morning ... never, ever would I intentionally try to offend anyone like that. I am so sorry."
