Jared Leto is getting his Joker movie after all
If you'll recall, Leto had a small supporting role playing the character in the 2016 film Suicide Squad. Despite going full method for the character—which included sending disgusting gifts to his co-stars—the bulk of his scenes were ultimately cut from the final movie.
According to Margot Robbie, whose Harley Quinn was one saving grace of Suicide Squad, this was because his scenes didn't exactly make sense with the rest of the plot. Leto, however, was thrilled with Method Actor Jared Leto's performance and thought he deserved his own movie.
Naturally, Method Actor Jared Leto must be thrilled that Method Actor Jared Leto is getting his own Joker movie. According to Variety, this will be part of a series of movies branching off of the disappointing Suicide Squad, which will begin with Robbie's Birds of Prey film and continue with the Joker film.
But if you're confused about how this fits in with the other Joker movies in the works, don't worry, because it doesn't actually make much sense. As Variety reports:
When Warner Bros. announced last fall that it was developing a Joker origin tale from Todd Phillips, the studio emphasized that this did not mean the end for Leto’s Joker. Rather, Phillips’ film would fall under a new origins banner that would be separate from the current cinematic DC universe. This new banner would allow multiple actors and versions based on the same character with no overlap, and WB has already tapped Joaquin Phoenix to star in Phillips’ Joker pic.
As it stands right now, Warner Bros. DC universe is a complete mess. So, why not try to fix the problem, by expanding on a critically ravaged franchise by doubling down on an over-used character played by two different actors in two competing timelines? Sounds like a great idea.
