How Will Smith became Will Smith
Long before he was a superstar actor, and long before he was a TV star, Will Smith was just a breakout rapper coming off a hit debut. DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince had released a smash, made money, won a Grammy, and were closing down the Gucci store in Atlanta.
But their next album was a flop, Will Smith explains in another great YouTube video.
"I had spent all my money, and I didn't forget, but I didn't pay the IRS," Will says in the video. "In my mind, I wasn't trying to avoid paying taxes. I was just like, 'Ah damn, they need their money.' Being famous and broke is a shitty combination."
Will Smith, if you can believe it, was broke and laying around. That's when his girlfriend told him to just go stand around The Arsenio Hall Show. It was there where he met Quincy Jones, who would go on to be the executive producer of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
The rest, from there, is all history.
But the moral of the story, Will says, is "always say yes, and listen to your girlfriend."
