Supercharge your morning coffee | Esquire Essentials
Your morning coffee is no longer just morning coffee.
People who consider their body a temple have long been adding in potions and powders to enhance what they're sipping on. Bulletproof founder and CEO Dave Asprey is their patron saint.
"Blending grass-fed butter and Bulletproof Brain Octane oil into your coffee is the single most powerful way to hack your cravings, turn on your brain, lose weight, and balance your hormones," he says. "Those kind of quality fats are clean-burning energy sources that keep your body and brain running at maximum capacity."
Below, his advice on becoming a morning mixologist.
The Coffee Maker
Grosche French Press
For one cup of coffee, use 2 1/2 heaping tablespoons of freshly ground coffee. Asprey suggests using a French press "to preserve beneficial coffee oils that paper filters keep out" (and because it's marginally easier than digging out a machine and plugging it in).
Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil
The brand's much-buzzed-about oil is "an ultra-purified MCT oil that is four times more effective than coconut oil at raising brain-boosting ketones," says Asprey. Go slow in case your cranium's not ready: Add one tablespoon to start and work up to two once you get
used to your amped-up coffee.
MAV Nutrition Collagen Peptides
"Over the last few years, more people have started paying attention to the amazing benefits of collagen. It helps strengthen hair, nails, joints, and skin elasticity, but it’s hard to find in modern diets," says Asprey. So scoop it in yourself. Typical powders are tasteless, but flavoured versions can add a sweetness to your overall coffee blend (Bulletproof makes powders in chocolate and vanilla).
Kerrygold Irish Unsalted Butter
"Lots of people are talking about putting butter in their coffee these days, yet they're doing it wrong by sticking a pat of margarine on top of the cup of coffee and watching it melt," says Asprey. Instead, use unsalted, grass-fed butter—"make sure it's unsalted, because salty coffee is gross"—to prolong the energy boost from the caffeine. Add as much as you want to taste.
The Extra Boost
Terrasoul Maca Powder
Asprey suggests a whole host of other powders and supplements to add into your coffee, including Maca powder to "help balance hormones and reverse hypothyroidism. It’s also high in vitamins and minerals like magnesium, potassium, and zinc." Also to consider? L-Theanine to mitigate poor sleep quality and anxiety, turmeric for its anti-inflammatory properties, and grape seed oil for positive effects on blood cholesterol levels (and intriguing flavour notes).
Ninja Fit Single Serve Blender
"Using a blender to combine your ingredients is absolutely essential. When you use a blender, you get a frothy, delicious latte-like beverage. Without, it's an oily mess," Asprey says. Mix for 20 to 30 seconds, stopping when you see the aforementioned, legitimately-delicious-looking frothiness.
