Will we ever see the legendary ‘Fedal’ again?
Even if you're not a fan of tennis, or never really watch it, there are two names that will instantly jump to mind when thinking about the sport; Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
The duo have been stealing the limelight, and swung their rackets towards a combined 35 Grand Slam titles over the past 2 decades.
But recently, tennis fans worldwide were treated to a phenomenal scene that will forever go down in history, when the duo; now referred to as 'Fedal', teamed up to compete in the Laver cup.
To put this in context, it would be like Ronaldo and Messi or Lebron James and Steph Curry being on the same team in their respective sports. Madness!
The all-time rivals showed great sportsmanship, putting their rivalry aside as they smashed their opposition and won the title for Europe.
A fine athletic performance saw the duo lift the trophy for a team that was captained by Roger Federer. They successfully won eight of their 12 matches, but given the event's staggered point allotment, Team World had a chance all the way until the end, when Federer defeated Nick Kyrgios, saving a match point in the process.
All thanks to Nadal’s motivating words, Federer duly turned things around to deliver victory for his team in the inaugural tournament.
“Just to be a bit more aggressive,” Nadal told Sky Sports when asked what he said to Federer. “He is playing great, and controlling the points from the base line; but we thought that he could be a bit more aggressive on the forehand and Roger agreed.”
Will we ever see this iconic duo compete side-to-side again?
‘We had great team spirit and it’s been one of the nicest weeks we’ve had. Well done Team World for a great fight – I’m already looking forward to next year.’ A pleased Nadal commented; highlighting his team’s confirmed return next year. Exciting news !
