Mains by Skepta
Having headlined Glastonbury’s Other Stage with Boy Better Know over the weekend, grime MC Skepta is hardly a man with a lot of time on his hands. A rapper, producer, songwriter, and music video director, Skepta – birth name Joseph Junior Adenuga – can now add designer to that ever-growing list of accomplishments.
Mains, Skepta’s debut collection is set to launch this summer as a global exclusive to Selfridges and Selfridges online, though purchases will also be available through the Mains website (with worldwide shipping) from July 10th.
A premium contemporary unisex brand formed under the creative direction of the prolific grime MC, Mains was born from Skepta’s desire to re-invent the standard military drill top into a unique fashion statement. Pairing the drill top with a matching tracksuit, an item that Skepta himself is no stranger to, the result is a stylish and sleek interpretation of an iconic Brit streetwear staple.
Keeping things clean with its black and olive green tracksuits and white, black, and heather tops, Mains provides a pared back simplicity sure to appeal to even the most ardent Skepta skeptics. Whilst this collection is small, a range of t-shirts, socks, boxers, outerwear, bags, and hats are set to follow in September as subsequent drops of new products intend to expand the range.
Relaxed-fit cotton-jersey t-shirt, Dhs185; Track cotton-drill top, Dhs700; Track cotton-drill jogging bottoms, Dhs770
Playing with the codes of sportswear and military attire, Mains reinterprets the humble tracksuit as a symbol for freedom of movement – an ethos that itself has traversed across multiple generations and destinations. Combining Italian cotton track-suiting, premium Portuguese Prime Pima cotton t-shirts, and bags co-developed with fabrics sourced from French military suppliers – Mains is supplying some serious international flavour to British streetwear.
A refreshed, street culture infused, modernization of your antiquated explorer’s safari suit, we expect that Mains is going to be a brand that you’re going to be hearing a lot about over the next few years. Trust me daddy.
