Answers to the most-Googled men's style questions
At any given second there are around 40,000 humans interacting with Google, asking everything from the meaning of life to the secret to perfect Flapjacks (too crumbly and they're ruined!).
And while you can probably expect plenty of questions to be of an NSFW theme, sometimes a guy just wants to be offered a straight-forward style solution, which is where we come in.
Taking the five most-popular menswear search terms, we offer up some advice on how to tackle everything from appropriate sleeve rolling to formal accessories.
But seriously, we do have a decent Flapjack recipe, too... just let us know if you want it.
1. How To Keep White Converse Clean?
A popular question for a popular shoe, the problem with white trainers is that they can be a nightmare to keep clean, particularly if they're made out of canvas - as Converse are.
While there are all sorts of methods out there, your best weapon for whiteness is foresight, which means applying a shoe protector (like Crep Protect) on your precious All Stars before stepping forth into the filthy breach.
For the actual cleaning of them, you can't do any better than the Jason Markk Cleaning Kit, a magic elixir that will take even the scruffiest Converse back to their box fresh best.
We've also done a guide, if you're looking for even more depth.
2. How To Wear Boots?
Slightly ambiguous, but what are you going to do? If you want the literal answer to how to wear boots, then it helps to buy them in the right size and then put them on your feet - preferably with socks underneath.
If you want to know how to style boots, then we'd say, beyond buying a sturdy pair in black or dark brown that aren't of the Cowboy variety, the quality of your look is decided by the fit of your jeans... no suits or shorts, please.
Best matched with black or dark indigo denim (selvedge optional), make sure the cuffs of your jeans rest above the top of your boot. There's no need to go full hipster, but you don't want any pooling over the top of the laces.
For the top half, you can do no wrong with a plain white, black or grey t-shirt.
3. How To Wear A Tie Clip?
While there's plenty of room for maneuver when it comes to modern fashion rules, where to place your tie clip is steadfast and eternal: it goes in between the third and fourth button on your shirt.
It's also important to remember that, if you're going to wear a tie-clip, avoid any other embellishments like a pocket square. It's easy to kill to a great tailoring look by overdressing it.
4. How To Roll Sleeves?
Step 1: Unbutton your cuffs.
Step 2: Turn the cuff inside out.
Step 3: Fold back the cuff, using its width as a measuring point.
Step 4: Keep folding until your sleeve is just below your elbow.
Step 5: Profit!
It's also worth noting that your cuff should only rest above your elbow when you're performing tasks like building a house or digging a trench for the bodies of your enemies.
If you're tapping away at your computer, keep that cuff below the 'bow.
5. What shoes to wear with shorts?
Let's get this one out of the way early: you should not be wearing flip flops unless you are at - or very near - the beach. It does not matter if it's 30 in the city or you have feet that would make a fetishist weep; keep those toes covered.
Ok, now that we've gone over that, what shoes to wear with shorts? Well, if you want the easy breathability of a flip-flop with none of the added shame, then a pair of rope-soled espadrilles are an always-solid choice (we like the ones made by Castañer). Otherwise we'd recommend an old favourite (for good reason, mind you): the white tennis shoes.
If you can handle the heat, then leather is fine, otherwise may we direct your attention to the Primeknit iteration of adidas' seminal Stan Smith, a lighter, much more breathable version that's ideal for summers in the city... or anywhere, really.
Finally, if you're that way inclined, there's nothing wrong with a pair of leather deck shoes. The ones by Timberland are always a good shout.
Finally, finally... no cargo shorts.
