Review: Tap House
While it seems that the building works on Palm Jumeirah will never cease, the recent opening of Club Vista Mare is a welcome addition to the district. As one of seven new restaurants overlooking the water, Tap House fills a niche as the relaxed, local sports bar, albeit with on-trend faux industrial interiors.
However, as so often the case with Dubai, it is much more than just that. Its location ensures that there is plenty to attract customers who aren’t interested in watching sport, and there’s plenty of space on the outdoor terrace to make the most of the winter weather. Indoors, the bar offers up various taps and craft drinks from around the world, to go along with its surprisingly good (if not very adventurous) modern European bar favourites. The staff are only too happy to point you in the direction of the menu’s standout dish, the Heisenburger – crispy fried chicken, truffle and tomato and pineapple relish.
While rarely ‘too busy to function’, Tap House tends to welcome a flow of young professionals on week nights, thanks to various offers including a ladies’ night and happy hour. In true UAE-style, there’s also a Friday brunch. If you’re not in a hurry, the a la carte set-up is worth considering for medium-sized groups and parties.
Like many restaurants that were conceived over the last 24 months in the UAE, the restaurant has an 'industrial' theme. There's exposed brickwork, metal pipes in the ceiling and old-school filament lights hanging above the bar. Someone certainly put a lot of effort into interior decorating, but with views overlooking the Palm and the Burj Al Arab beyond, most people choose to sit outside in the sun.
The Tap House now offers a Friday brunch – providing you with unlimited drinks and a curated 'pub fare' brunch menu - expect burgers, hot wings, pies and fish and chips. While it's not fine dining, it is a step above typical pub food. Friday service is good, but with a restaurant made up of casual drinkers, lunchers, as well as boisterous brunch-goers, staff seem a tad confused.
It's not uncommon to see diners querying where their food has gotten to, although thankfully, drinks come out swiftly. That said, the Tap House brunch is unashamedly casual and good value for money – which is a rarity for a country dominated by five star hotels and fine dining restaurants.- - -
