The best spot to watch New Year’s Eve fireworks in Dubai
Dubai is the perfect place to see in the New Year with a bang – also whizzes, pops and bright explosions in the sky. The city has quite the reputation when it comes to fireworks, especially on occasions like New Year’s Eve, and it even holds a number of Guinness World Records for its displays.
Celebrations always start way before midnight. At City Walk in Jumeirah, for example, you can marvel at the various street entertainers and acrobats, with other events and promotions taking place. Finally, the venue will launch its own fireworks just before midnight. This could be a good choice, as you get all of the traditional New Year’s entertainment, plus restaurants and shops in the same place.
Or turn your attention to the main event – the midnight fireworks at the Burj Khalifa. These are always the most talked about (and expensive, with around US$6 million spent). For New Year’s Eve in 2015, the world’s tallest skyscraper had fireworks erupting from every side, including the very the top, with 1.6 tonnes released in just under 10 minutes.
A record was set at the tower in 2013 for the most fireworks launched per minute. In a six-minute display, 479,651 shells were fired, making an average of 79,941 every 60 seconds. Proof if it were needed that whatever the year, this is a must-see spectacle.
But others can be just as impressive. Following the Burj Khalifa, eyes will turn towards the Burj Al Arab and Jumeirah Beach Residence’s The Beach only minutes later. Look towards the Palm Jumeirah and you will also see fireworks lighting up the sky above the Atlantis the Palm hotel.
The trick is never to worry about whether you will see fireworks – the skies over Dubai become one huge display – but where you watch them. Some opt for a hotel or restaurant and others the beach.
