Who is Mr Tylr?
As a long-time champion of the local fashion industry, we have been rather excited about the launch of Mr Tylr, a Dubai-based menswear label that launches its debut collection this month. We caught up with its creator, Ifeanyi Ibekwe, to ask him the core questions:
Who...is Mr Tylr?
He’s essentially the personification of my creativity. For the longest time I looked for ways to channel my creativity into something palpable, and that manifested itself into fashion and, more specifically, shirts.
What...made you want to start the label?
I am a visual thinker. I think in pictures, whether that is in my previous job as an interior designer or with the patterns for Mr Tylr. I want to create shirts that are hard to ignore. To me, the UAE is about cultural diversity and that raw summer heat, so the goal of the first collection was to stitch the feeling of “summer” onto a piece of cloth.
Why...are you different?
Exclusivity plays a central role in what we do. We do not make more than three shirts from any of our unique fabrics, so you are very unlikely to ever see anyone wearing the same piece as you — we want our customers to feel like they are unique, because they are.
How...did you chose the patterns?
I wanted each piece of the collection to shout masculinity. I wanted the prints to be bold, but not to be too overwhelming. Prints for the first collection include animals, skulls and, because I am fascinated by time, clocks.
