Cinema pick: Cafe Society
After the altogether depressing Irrational Man of his latest outing, director Woody Allen has decided to go a little light-hearted (and we mean a little) with the release of his latest film Cafe Society.
The rom-com-come-drama tells the love story of Bronx-boy Bobby (Jesse Eisenberg), who looking for a little oomph in his life decides to live out his American dream in the mystical world of Hollywood. Seduced by the glitz and glam of ‘ol Cally he is swept of his feet when he is introduced to his uncle’s beautiful assistant (played by Kristen Stewart). But there’s a catch ... she’s already taken!
Taking place in the golden age of American cinema, the spectacle captures the complex characters of the period from Steve Carell’s big shot Hollywood agent, Phil, to the charming yet witty socialite, Vonnie. What truly stands out is the cinematography. Jumping from cold and desaturated colour filter at the beginning to a warm and sunny theme in Los Angeles, you really get a feel for what Bobby is going through.
Bottomline: Woody Allen, gangsters, trendy outfits, Hollywood and drama. Need I say more? Right. And Blake Lively.
Showing in UAE cinemas, October 13th.
