Your apartment is a huge turn off
There are things about your house that are making you undateable. Sorry. Luckily, some deal breakers have surprisingly simple fixes. Time to deal with them.
Wayfair, a US-based online home decor retailer, surveyed over 2,000 people about what they considered dating deal breakers in the home. Far and away, a smelly house was the biggest maintenance deal breaker, followed by a grimy bathroom, bad plumbing, and excessive dirty laundry. The only responses that made the list where the solution required more than a bottle of soap and a bit of elbow grease—or a lot, depending on how repulsive the bathroom is—were poorly behaved pets and no air conditioning or heat.
The second category of deal breakers—those involving decoration—were far less serious, with ripped or damaged upholstery coming in as the most recorded deal breaker and ugly or inappropriate artwork as the second.
And don't live with your parents. That won't work for 50 percent of the people you bring home.
The breakdown for men and women offered two insights: Men were more concerned by poorly trained pets, and women were more put off by ugly artwork. So, make sure the cat pees in the litter box, and if the wall of your bedroom features a tattered poster of Scarface-era Al Pacino or Bob Marley with a spliff, it needs to get gone.
Overall, it comes down to cleanliness. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend 28 minutes a day on interior cleaning, while men spend only 11. If 11 minutes (or 28) is all it takes for you to de-stink the couch and make the bathroom usable, then proceed. If you need more time, well, the commitment is probably worth it.
