Fabien Oefner's exploding car series
How complicated can it be to be a car mechanic? The answer: very. Just ask the Swiss artist Fabian Oefner whose painstaking series of works sees him digitally creating scenes of ‘exploded’ classic race cars.
Showing this month at the MB&F M.A.D Gallery in Dubai, the Disintegrating II exhibition features the artist’s latest works deconstructing scale models of iconic racing cars into thousands of tiny pieces — from the body shell down to the microscopic screws.
Starting with the magnificent 1936 Auto Union Type C race car, and including others such as a Maserati 250F, Ford GT40, Bugatti 57 SC, and Porsche 956, Oefner creates the mesmerising images by dismantling the models, photographing each piece, and then compiling close to 2,000 images using computer-generated renderings.
These painstakingly put-together images create moments that Oefner says “we will never see in real life.” It’s lucky for us, then, that thanks to him, we can.
