A sport to admire
While you may have hung up your skateboard a few years back, here are some boards that won’t make you feel old. Dubai art and design concept store, Cities, is hosting an exhibition of works by Greek-American artist Fotis Gerakis this month. The exhibit, which runs from April 19 – 29 in the boutique at Galleria Mall on Al Wasl Road, will showcase Gerakis’ skateboard art in a first for the store.
“At Cities it’s very important for us to develop good relationships with upcoming designers and artists; we want to encourage them and provide whatever support we can to help them grow and succeed,” explains Hazem Aljesr, the owner of Cities boutique. “This exhibit is the first in a series of events that we are planning in an effort to share their innovative art and design creations with the world.”
Gerakis’ award-winning art, which focuses on contrast, mastery of the self, fantasy, objectification, and desire, all evident in the skateboards in this series, has won him six Emmy awards, numerous Telly awards, while he’s also received a silver BDA/PROMAX award for his work. Gerakis is also one of the co-founders of a design firm based in Riyadh and Beirut, where he has helped influence the design trends of the region. The focus of his exhibition at Cities offers a challenging perspective on possession and identity as the artist uses a medium that is typically used to characterize the urban youth. Gerakis re-brands the skateboard as art worthy of being hung in homes and museums, showing respect for the themes and styles often used in this realm of art which has its roots in graffiti and street art.
So discover the pieces this month, and if you do decided to buy, just tell the missus it’s art. For more info, head over to Cities.
