Under Armour goes galactic with new footwear and space suits for astronauts
Under Armour has decided to go where no sports apparel brand has gone before. Space.
Virgin Galactic and Under Armour have partnered to create a new generation of space apparel and footwear, as well as an astronaut performance training program.
The brand will serve as the 'Technical Spacewear Partner' of Virgin Galactic, part of Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group. It will design custom space suits and footwear for Virgin Galactic passengers and pilots, consisting of a complex blend of safety, utility, comfort and style.
"Our partnership is built on the firm foundations of shared values, and it will be an absolute privilege to wear an Under Armour astronaut space suit on Virgin Galactic's inaugural commercial space flight," said Sir Richard Branson on the partnership.
The company will also be designing uniforms for the Virgin Galactic employees, however no other details have been released. In 2016, Virgin had partnered with Y-3 by Yohji Yamamoto to handle the apparel aboard Virgin Galactic flights. But there's been no word on the partnership since.
Richard Branson first announced Virgin Galactic back in 2004 and in December last year, it successfully managed to reach the 'edge of space' with its SpaceShipTwo suborbital spaceplane.
The company will also create physical training programs for astronauts to undergo in preparation for the flights with a focus on enhancing mobility, strength, fitness, nutrition, and sleep. So, where can we sign up?
